Maria Reyes had lived in the same two-bedroom apartment on Cesar Chavez Avenue for eleven years. Her landlord — a shell LLC registered in Delaware — slid the notice under her door on the last Friday of October.
Using Shelter's Emergency Lockout Checklist, Maria documented every violation, photographed the changed locks, and reached a pro bono attorney through our directory by 8 a.m. Saturday. The attorney filed for emergency relief that afternoon.

When Darnell Washington received a rent increase notice in February — 47% in a single year — he recognized it as the same displacement pattern he'd watched hollow out two neighboring blocks.
He downloaded Shelter's Rent Strike Planning Guide and organized twelve of his building's fourteen units. The collective withheld rent into an escrow account and filed a habitability complaint citing 23 documented code violations.
The Chicago Housing Court ruled in their favor. The landlord was required to make repairs, roll back the increase to 5%, and sign a two-year lease stabilization agreement. Darnell now runs Shelter's Englewood chapter.
